MEET NICK
My name is Nick Der. Five years ago I was a financial corporate slave working 70-80 hours a week helping the top 1% build their wealth, and I absolutely dreaded my work. I was in the office by 6am and got back to my apartment at 9pm and frequently worked weekends. I didn’t have any time for myself, my passions, and to discover what was truly important to me.
I was earning a high salary but was totally hiding behind my income, oblivious and unconscious to where and how much money I was actually spending. Even though I graduated with a finance degree in the Silicon Valley and worked at a portfolio management firm, I was like a fish out of water when it came to my personal finances.
While working, I lived in San Francisco in a 873 sq. ft. apartment where rent was $4,300/mo. To add, I had $35k+ in student loan debt, 5-figure credit card debt, was spending $455/mo on coffee, buying breakfast, lunch and dinner 6 days a week, and using my credit card like I had won the lotto, living under the justification that I “got points”. I was not being responsible for my finances and was stressed because I didn’t have control over my money.
There was a real loss of power when it came to my money, and more specifically, my relationship to money.
I felt like it would be forever until I actually got to focus on my wealth building and the habits necessary to win-- my bucket lists would have to take a back seat. It felt like the life of my dreams and what was vibrantly possible and alive only 6 months prior since graduation was being doused by a firehose.
My life had truly become a hamster wheel, only the wheel kept spinning and the hamster (me) had lost the desire to run anymore. I didn’t see the true purpose or role money played in my life. I was asleep and unconscious.
Since implementing the Zero-Based Budget, my life has completely shifted. I am saving and putting myself first (10% rule), being mindful of my spending and eating out, and most importantly, I have the peace of mind knowing where my money is going. I am in control.
By knowing why money is important to me and where I stand financially at any point in time, I am able to see clearly the necessary actions I need to take when it comes to my money.
I am able to align my spending with what I truly value and what’s important to me. I am able to satisfy my coffee cravings, festival itches, and travel desires, all the while knowing how these choices impact my budget. Ultimately, I am satisfied knowing that all of my spending is going where I want it to be going and in things that add value to my life.
By combining the time to honor myself and what is important to me, as well as having a cash flow management structure, I have been able to satisfy my coffee cravings every day, attend 37 festivals and concerts in the last 12 months, and travel-- I’ll be on 59 flights and 3 boats/cruises (including several international trips) in 2019. I live a life I truly love, because I’m at the source of creating it.
Moreover, handling my finances has allowed me to show up fully in the other areas of my life. At work, with family and friends, and even in my health and well-being. I am satisfied, accomplished, and inspired to share what I’ve gotten with others and have them discover what lights them up.
Friends, family, and clients of mine ask how I’m able to make everything work with my money and I always respond that it’s a matter of knowing what I value and enjoy, and executing a plan that aligns with that. It really is as easy as it sounds. How I did this isn’t rocket science, and literally ANYONE could do it with the proper training and structure.
Without being connected to what’s important to you, no app, budget or cash flow management system is going to make a difference. There’s so many financial advisors and experts in the field who provide advice that is outdated, unfeasible, and straight up unworkable. But the beauty of this course is that it’s a wake up call-- a wake up call to your life and what’s important to you. Not to the Joneses, society, or your Instagram following...you.
It boiled down to one powerful question I asked myself: why is money important to me?
Whether you are interested in being able to align your spending with your values OR you simply want more money at the end of your money (vs. more month at the end of your money) this is one of the greatest opportunities of this generation.
